Counselling in Sheffield

  • But what is seeing a counsellor like?
  • What happens in the sessions?
  • What will the counsellor be like?

This page hopefully answers those questions for you and will introduce you to some of the counsellors in Sheffield who could help you.

What is therapy all about?

Therapy (also known as counselling or psychotherapy) is about you having a space where you can feel comfortable and secure to enable you to talk about thoughts and feelings. The thoughts that you may have been having may be difficult, painful or difficult but when you work with and experienced professional there is the potential to feel better.

Therapy offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. It allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen attentively and to help you improve things.

How will I feel as a result of therapy?

It is hard to be definite about how different people will feel as a result of therapy as different people are different. For some people things can seem to get worse as a result of therapy. Talking openly and honestly with a therapist can bring up all sorts of thoughts and feelings that you may have been ignoring or running away from for some time.

The plan is that in the long run that you feel more able to manage your life and your thoughts.

Although based in Chesterfield I have been looking to expand my hypnotherapy practice into the Sheffield area but was having difficulty in locating a suitable therapy room for hire. I then decided to do a search for "therapy room for hire" and "hypnotherapy in Sheffield" and one of the options which came up was the Sheffield Wellness Centre on Abbeydale Road. When looking at the website, the premises looked exactly what I was looking for so I made an appointment to view. The Sheffield Wellness Centre exceeded my expectations. It is in a convenient location and has all the facilities I have been looking for, including an online booking service. The therapy rooms are tastefully decorated and furnished and it will be a pleasure to work with my clients there.

I loved the atmosphere of this place! Since the first contact, they were very welcoming and supportive. The location is perfect, surrounded by beautiful stores and a coffee shop, but still very quiet, like an island of peace in the middle of the city. The rooms were cosy, well isolated and perfectly fitted for any therapy. I loved the flexibility and openness to use the premises as well as all the support they offer to develop my personal practice. I'm looking forward to starting working with this beautiful team!

I was extremely impressed when I first met Richard, he was kind, informative and genuinely interested in my profession, we chatted for ages and there was no rush. I was in need of a therapy space to work privately and was definitely not dissapointed once shown round the rooms. They are spacious, well equiped and a competitive rate per hour. Richard even went the extra mile (after listening to how I work) by buying and placing something in one the rooms which I can use with my clients. He did not need to do this, but shows how much he cares about the professionals and clients who come to the Wellness Centre. I am thrilled to be using the rooms at the Wellness Centre and look forward to what they hold for my clients. Thank you Richard!!

Richard has helped me greatly with my anxiety. For years I struggled to leave my comfort zone by changing my job and I dreaded having to have an interview. However using the hypnosis tools he gave me I felt calm and confident during the interview and got the job! I now feel better equipped to handle situations that previously would have caused me a lot of anxiety. The clinic is in a lovely, relaxed setting and Richard puts you at ease straight away, making the whole process feel easy. He records the sessions so you can listen to them whenever you need to which I found to be really beneficial and definitely money well spent. I would recommend anyone who needs help with anxiety or any issues to go and see Richard and give hypnosis a try.

Pamper PartyWhat a great idea! A bit of ‘me time’, in the most wonderfully relaxing surroundings. The Wellness Centre has such a relaxed, homely feel to it - much nicer than my actual home, as it is clean, tidy and welcoming! The atmosphere immediately put me at ease, I absolutely loved having time to chill out, chat and eat cake. Fi is the perfect hostess, making sure that we all had everything we needed, with her wonderful warm and caring manner. It was great to be able to choose what particular treatment or massage I wanted on the day. I surprised myself by trying something new and going for the hot stones massage, and I’m so glad I did. It was amazing, so deep and yet so gentle. It was really nice to experience my massage while listening to everyone else chatting happily, too. I completely recommend this if you are looking for the perfect excuse to have some guilt free time to yourself.

How long will it take for counselling to help me feel better?

Again, counselling is an individual experience and there is no definitive answer to this question. Generally speaking seeing a counsellor is a short to medium term type of therapy. Seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist tends to be a medium to long term kind of therapy.

How do I find a counsellor near me?

There are many websites that will list local therapists. An alternative is to scroll down this page and look at the therapists who use the Sheffield Wellness Centre. Feel free to contact them and ask questions about who they are and how they might be able to help you.

Does therapy always work for everybody?

No is the short and honest answer. Talking about problems can be tough. That means that finding the motivation to continue to talk about things that are difficult means that sometimes people drop out of the process.
Also, therapy is not a cure-all so even if you do complete the process you may still not feel any better. Any therapist who guarantees change is acting in an unethical way and is likely not being honest with you.

What should I look for in a therapist?

The great thing about there being so many counsellors and so many types of therapy is that there is a lot of variety. This means that if you have decided that you would like to try counselling there is a good chance that you will be able to find someone who suits your personality and has a chance of helping you to reach your goals.
Things you should look for when choosing a counsellor include:

  • Are they member of a professional governing body?
  • Are they experienced in helping people with similar issues to you?
  • Do you get a good vibe from them when you speak to them?

Are there different types of therapy?

There are many many different styles and approaches when it comes to counselling but there have been studies that have shown that the rapport between you and your counsellor is more important that they type of therapy they practise.

A good therapist knows that it can be a big step to see counsellor. It is for this reason that a good counsellor will not push you into working with them. They will however provide you with information about who they are and how they work so that you can make an informed decision about whether you work with them or not.

Of the types of counselling available there are five main groups of psychological therapies.

  1. Behavioural therapies. These focus on behaviours and include approaches like CBT.
  2. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytical therapies. These approaches focus on relationship patterns that are believed to be based in childhood experiences and are expressed unconsciously.
  3. Humanistic therapies focus on the ‘here and now’ and aim to facilitate self-development.
  4. Arts therapies, use creative arts inside the process of therapy.
  5. Couples counselling, as the name suggests, is focused on helping couples to change and improve their relationship.

Some counsellors stick rigidly to one particular style of therapy while some have an eclectic approach where they use different elements from different approaches in a more integrative form of counselling.

What is the difference between a therapist and a psychotherapist?

The terms ‘therapist’ and ‘psychotherapist’ are sometimes used interchangeably as the two terms do overlap in many ways. One of our counsellors, Mat Pronger, has written a great blog post on why counsellor and psychotherapist are now interchangeable terms. You might find his information helpful.

One of the biggest differences between a counsellor and a psychotherapist is in the amount of time therapy lasts for. Counselling with a therapist is usually a brief treatment that focuses on behaviour patterns. Psychotherapy usually involves a more long term approach and aims to help clients develop deeper understanding of their difficulties through examination of their emotions and history.

A psychotherapist does offer a style of counselling to their clients but someone equally qualified might choose to call themselves a counsellor rather than psychotherapist.

Main differences between counselling and psychotherapy

  • Aids in the identification of difficulties and issues and then focuses on what you can do to resolve them.
  • It can be particularly well suited to those who already have an above average level of self awareness and/or a solution focused attitude.
  • Counselling focuses on being a short term solution where behaviour changes and improvements are the focus.

What can counselling be used for?

Counselling can help with issues such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Eating disorders, like as bulimia and anorexia
  • Drug use

What to expect from seeing a counsellor

In counselling sessions your will supported and encouraged to talk about your emotions and feelings. Through discussion with the counsellor it is possible to gain a deeper understanding about what has been happening and this can also lead to solutions presenting themselves.
Just the process of talking to someone can be therapeutic and can bring a sense of being unburdened. A good counsellor with listen and will not judge you for anything you have said, done or felt.

What if I don’t like my therapist?

Rapport is the sense of connection combined with a sense of trust and mutual understanding. If this is missing when you meet your counsellor you should choose to work with someone else. Addressing this can dramatically increase your chances of a positive outcome from therapy as rapport is very important.

How much does counselling cost?

Different counsellors charge different amounts. It could cost anywhere from £10 to £70 per session. This can depend on where abouts in the country you live, your employment status and the experience of the counsellor.

To get a specific quote from any of the counsellors based at the Sheffield Wellness Centre click on their profile picture to see their profile where the amount should be listed or call or email them directly.

What are the alternatives to counselling?

Counselling is not the perfect solution for everyone. Some people don’t have the time or money for counselling and want an approach that is different. If this is you then maybe you might want to consider CBT – cognitive behavioural therapy.

A second alternative to counselling/psychotherapy is hypnotherapy. This approach is often even quicker than CBT. A professional and experienced hypnotherapist might see a client for only three or four treatment sessions. The process often focuses on the future and about getting positive and appealing behaviours familiar and expected before the time for them to be needed arrives. In this way, when that situation develops the desirable behaviour is more likely to happen.
